Chisimba is a MVC rapid application development framework for creating web applications that are platform independent, browser independent, xHTML compliant, can use a number of common databases, including MySQL, Postgres, and MySQLi. It is also a suite of applications built upon this framework that can be assembled in a modular way to create web-based applications. Chisimba is not an attempt to compete with extisting applications in th CMS or e-learning space. Rather it is designed to be an enterprise-ready framework for building any kind of application that requires scalability and integration. With Chisimba you should be able to build enterprises applications that scale from a few to millions of users, and that easily integrate with common types of functionality while still retaining the simplicity that makes it easy to learn and easy to develop applications upon. It aims to do this while remaining suitable as a tool for learning the basis for software engineering in a FOSS community in Africa. Over 150 modules of functionality are available and these can be used out of the box to create a Content Management System, a feature-rich e-learning platform (KEWL 3.0), a group-based collaboration platform, a graduate student supervision and administration platform including electronic thesis publication (ETD), online news agency, etc. The e-learning implementation, called KEWL 3.0, is currently in Beta testing.
