Harm was (in 1176) a town in Germany. There was a wave of flesh immigrants that came through here in the middle ages. Often times (this far back) a last name was taken from an occupation of where you were from. Many towns in America bare the names of those who settled them.

Harman most likely has the same origin as the similar surnames Harmon, Hermon, and Herman. They are believed to originate from the Old German word, "Herremann", or sometimes "Herreman". This is a composition of the two German words "heri", which means army, and "mann", which means man. Most likely the two combined give the definition of some sort of warrior or soldier.
