A fresh clam in the shell should still be alive. If it's open and you touch a part of the flesh it should close up. If not...then it's dead and should be avoided.
275 days agoYou can tell if clams are fresh by whether or not they close. If you buy fresh clams and they are open, just tap them on the counter and if they close, then they are still alive and are okay to eat. If they don't open, they are dead and need discarded immediately.
